DAKINE Hot Laps 2L Waistpack

What:
The Dakine Hot Laps 2L waistpack.  This is the hip pack that doesn’t include a water bladder but does contain a water bottle holder.  I’ve been using the hip pack instead of a full backpack on more rides.  This pack retails for $40 at most retailers.

Pros:
The Dakine Hot Laps hip pack has been great on rides where I can go with just a water bottle.  For me this is almost 95% of my rides.  I’ve  found the pack has enough space to hold a pump, spare gloves, food and my tool roll. The pack is made with some fairly durable materials and has survived a full season of riding.

Cons:
The lack of a bladder means you either need to carry water on the bike or in the water bottle holder in the pack.  If you carry a large water bottle in the pack, you’ll feel the pack sag and need to adjust the waist straps throughout your ride.  I only ever had to adjust the waist straps when I used the water bottle holder on the pack.

Conclusion:
For the price this is a great pack to pick up and decide if you can go without the a backpack.  The water bottle holder is on the side, so the pack can get lopsided and require you to adjust throughout your ride.  I have a water bottle holder on my bike, so I have a work around for this issue.  You can buy the 5L version which comes with a bladder if this is an issue.
