Butcher Ranch, Downieville, CA

Butcher Ranch is the section of Downieville that I had the most fun riding.  It starts out with some scenic high alpine riding, then gets into the really fun chunder in the forest and ends on some milder but fast and flowy trail as you finish by river.

The high alpine section of Downieville is pretty chill and you can probably ride this section at any pace you choose.  I was a lot more interested in soaking in the views, so I road at a more causal pace ahead of the slower guys but well behind the race pack.

Once you hit the gorge feature, you will start on the more advanced sections of Butcher Ranch.  This section of trail can get fast, loose and technical at times.  You’ll want to be on your A game and at full attention for the rest of the trail.

As we approach the end of Butcher Ranch, we have descended over 2500ft of elevation and covered five miles of some of the best singletrack I’ve ridden.  This section alone is the reason to come ride Downieville.  By the end of this trail, you will be both mentally and physically tired from having to be on attention for the whole descent.  Again you finish up at another popular meeting point where people linger around before starting the climb for third divide.
