ShockWiz Top 5 Setup Tips

Watch on YouTube

Now that I've got a new bike to setup, the suspension tuning is a top priority for me.  I want this bike to work at its best so that means I'm strapping the ShockWiz back on my bike.  Here are my top five tips for using a ShockWiz on your mountain bike.

#1 - Compression Ratio
ShockWiz needs to know your Fork/Shock compression ratio.  I have no idea if you can find this number from the manufacturer but you can follow the ShockWiz setup wizard to get this value.  The setup takes maybe five minutes and is pretty simple to complete. Without the correct compression ratio, you would get a good setup.

#2 - Shock Travel
Shock Travel must be +- 3% in the app.  I’ve seen this is a couple videos and just watched them blow their entire testing because the app wasn’t setup correctly.   If this number is off, you need to make sure you bike is upright and you aren’t compressing the shock.  The you can just click the button and restart the session.  If that number is way past 3% then the shock/fork is not going to give the correct data to the shockwiz.

#3 - Tune Style
Choose the balanced setup, then decide of you want a plush or firmer setup.  The ShockWiz uses Balanced as the default setup and you should too.  The tuning style seems to be too soft on Playfull and too firm on Efficient.  I’d recommend starting on Balanced and then decide to switch if the Balanced setup isn’t what you prefer.

#4 - Trust, but Verify
Shock setup is dependent on Fork setup and vise versa.  If your fork setup is junk, it will affect the shock setup.  So I make sure the fork is in the default settings for my size then I start with the ShockWiz on the shock.  Once the ShockWiz likes the shock, I move it to the Fork.  Then I’ll move it back to the shock to validate the settings are still good.

#5 - Ride More
Setting up your bike with ShockWiz will probably take about 6 or 8 rides.  Unless you have an amazing trail that will have all the trail items ShockWiz is looking for and you can just keep sessioning those trails, it will take several rides to get your suspension dialed. This is fine for those of you that own a ShockWiz but not good news for those that want to rent one.

So I hope this helps you out the next time you decide to use the ShockWiz on your bike.  I was really happy with how the ShockWiz helped my improve the suspension setup on my old bike.  Once I'm done setting up the new bike it should allow me to get the most out of my bike.
