Downieville Mountain Biking

Watch on YouTube

Downieville has to be the most epic ride I’ve ever been on. The trail we rode was a broken into four sections: Sunrise Trail, Butcher Ranch, 3rd Divide and First Divide. Sunrise Trail is a fun intro trail you access from the shuttle drop off than takes you through the high alpine. The trail is a bit loose but nothing anyone should worry about.

Butcher Ranch is where the trail becomes a black diamond and mixes technical riding with fast sections of trail. This is by far the best section of trail and the longest section of trail. The majority of the 4k foot descent is lost while riding Butcher Ranch.

3rd Divide is probably the scariest section of trail I’ve ridden. It is basically three miles of steady descent on a trail that doesn’t include any corners. Your speed can go as fast as are willing to push the bike. This trail is a Blue but ends unless you have a bike with good brakes, it can get hairy at the end. There is a technical section with rocks that can cause some real damage if you aren’t careful. If can also hurt of you are too careful. I took the section too slow and got stopped by one of those rocks and went over the bars.

You wrap up the ride on First Divide. This is a pretty basic trail but was you’ll see in my video, it’s easy to slip out on the loose gravely trail and crash. Thankfully I was ok and it was only a minor crash.
