Maxxis Shorty Review

Back in March I installed a Maxxis Shorty 2.3” as my rear tire. This was after getting a few suggestions from people on the channel to try this tire out. The Maxxis Shorty is a mid-spike tire best used in loose, soft or wet conditions. It’s also suggested for downhill riding.

The big difference between the Shorty and a DHF is the spacing of the knobs. Both tires have big spikes on the sides, but the DHF has a tighter pattern. The Shorty is a pretty aggressive tire to run as a rear but I found it did a great job this spring.

I’ve taken the Shorty to Levis Mound, Cuyuna Lakes, and several local trails to see how it performed on the different trails. You won’t win many XC races with Shorty as your rear tire but you sure will get some great grip in loose corners and it climbs up rocks like a champ.

The tire sure does have a lot more fun going downhill and will provide excellent braking power at speed. I had a lot of fun riding Levis Mound with the Shorty. The terrain there can get a bit soft so having the extra grip in corners was appreciated.

The Shorty was at home in the rocky sections of Theodore Wirth. I cleaned the rock climb on the North Loop every time with this as my rear tire.

Even though this isn’t a fast rolling tire I did manage to set some Strava PRs on climbing segments and full segments. This tire won’t slow you down too much and as a bigger guy, having that extra traction in corners was well worth the slower rolling in the flats.

I’m taking this tire off the rear and will be running a High Roller II for the next couple months. The High Roller has the same big knobs on the side but in a tighter pattern and has smaller center knobs to provide lower rolling resistance. I’ll update you all on that tire in the fall.
