One Ride Bike Review - 2017 Salsa Beargrease X5

Watch on YouTube

It was a beautiful winter day so I decided to rent a fat bike and head over to Theodore Wirth park.  The Salsa Beargrease X5 was the rental bike I picked up.  The Beargrease is a fully rigid fat bike spec’ed with Sram components.  The brakes were Avid and the drivetrain was a Sram X5 setup.  The tires on the bike were the 45Nrth Husker DU.

Overall I think the bike did an admirable job handling on the trail.  I was originally worried about the weight of a fat bike but found it was not a concern.  The shifting and brakes did alright but neither would be welcome on a bike I call my own.  The Sram X5 was adequate be not as pleasing as my Shimano XT drivetrain.  The Avid brakes squealed like a stuck pig before I even got them near the snow.

My biggest problem with this bike was the tire setup.  I found almost zero tracktion on climbs using the 45Nrth Husker DU tires.  There was so little knob profile I’m not surprised.  I believe this tire is meant for riding in fresh snow and is not that good on packed singletrack.  I would have probably been better off on a more aggressive fat bike tire.
