Let's Chat About Winter Riding

Winter is almost over here, we get snow about 45” of snow a year

I know a lot of cyclist ride outside all year, but I spend more time riding my trainer & skiing than on my bike.

Our shoulder season is typically mid-November till mid-December and then mid-March till mid-April were you need to be concerned about the freeze thaw cycle and not ruining trails.

By November, I’m normally ready for a bit of a break from the bike and look forward to ski season.  We can ski usually from December to the end of March and it becomes a priority for me to hit the slopes on the weekends.

The entire family skis and we always take a family ski trip during the winter. We have a season pass at Welch Village, south of the twin cities, and ski there almost every weekend.
Welch is a small family owned resort with 350ft of elevation.  It is located in a river valley so it is pretty cool location with the steepest runs in the twin cities.

Once December comes around, it’s time to start TrainerRoad.  I’ll spend more time on my trainer in a year than on my mountain bike.  I will complete the base and build plan before the trails open for the dirt season.  I mostly do Trainerroad to make sure I’m not huffing and puffing on the trails but I also ride the trainer to help with weight loss.  Keeps active in the winter isn’t that easy when the temps drop below zero outside.

This past  winter I did ride the bike more outside than in the past.  It’s hard to make time for riding outside between Skiing and TrainerRoad.  Riding in the snow isn’t as fun for me.  I will try to get out more next winter but it really is my third priority for riding in the winter.
